How bed bugs are introduced in your home or buildings

A traveler returned home bed bugss can hide in luggage and then crawl out when it’s dark and peaceful begin where luggage was placed upon returning home.

You may also inadvertently bring bed bugs into your home on infested bedding or furniture. If you purchase second-hand furniture, especially beds or mattresses, thoroughly inspect the item before bringing it into your home. If you remove infested mattresses or furniture from your home, don’t leave them on the curb or porch. Take such items immediately to the dump or clearly mark them as infested by bed bugs so others won’t unknowingly bring the items into their homes.

Residents of both the on-campus housing facilities and University Apartments can help keep bed bugs out of residences by following the precautionary measures listed below. When traveling, take precautions to avoid bringing bed bugs back to campus or your apartment by inspecting the bedding and furniture where you are staying. Use hangers or hooks to keep all clothing off of the floor and bed. Do not put your luggage or backpack directly on the bed or floor – keep them elevated using a luggage stand, tabletop, or other hard surface. Keep your luggage closed and zipped at all times. Before returning to campus or your apartment, inspect clothing and other items before packing. Check crevices in luggage and backpacks for signs of bed bugs. After returning to campus or your apartment, re-check all traveling gear and items. Unpack your luggage directly into a plastic bag and immediately take the clothing to a clothes dryer and dry for 20 minutes at a high heat cycle of at least 120 degrees. Do not store your luggage or backpack on your bed or any carpeted surface. If possible, store luggage in a large plastic bag and seal tightly, keeping it isolated from all other belongings. Don’t bring second-hand or discarded furniture such as bed frames, mattresses, box springs and upholstered furniture into the space where you are living. These are common breeding grounds for bed bugs. Clean and reduce the clutter in your room to eliminate places for bed bugs to hide during the day. Wash clothing and linen frequently in high temperatures to kill bed bugs. Both the water temperature and drying temperature should be 120 degrees or higher.

What should you do if you think you have bed bugs in your room or apartment?

Bed bugs do not simply wander in from the outside; instead they have to be transferred from one infested environment to another. Because of this, bed bugs have evolved into masters of hitchhiking. It is very unlikely that you have a problem with bed bugs if you have not picked up an item that is infested, stayed in an infested environment or had someone visit you that has been in an infested environment.

One proactive step a manager can take is to regularly replace beds, mattress, and bedding materials. Frequently laundering bedding and placing potentially infested items into walk-in freezers or heat units during tenant turnover can help prevent the spread and establishment of bed bugs. Keep clutter down, so it is easier to inspect and so bed bugs have fewer hiding places. Also, seal up cracks, crevices, and holes in bedding, furniture, and other potential hiding sites. It is much easier to manage a bed bug infestation when the population is small.Managers of hotels, furnished apartments, dormitories, homeless shelters, and other facilities that house transient populations need to train staff to recognize signs of bed bug activity and take action as soon as they find an infestation

What are the symptoms and signs of bedbug bites?

How To Kill and Get Rid Of BedBugs signs of bed bugsBed bugs are pretty small, and their mouths are even smaller. Bed bug saliva contains a substance that serves as a mild anesthetic, so when one bites you, it actually does you the favor of numbing your skin first. It’s very unlikely that you’d ever feel a bed bug bite when it happens. Bedbugs bite and suck blood from humans. Bedbugs are most active at night and bite any exposed areas of skin while an individual is sleeping. The face, neck, hands, and arms are common sites for bedbug bites. The bite itself is painless and is not noticed. Small, flat, or raised bumps on the skin are the most common sign; redness, swelling, and itching commonly occur. If scratched, the bite areas can become infected. A peculiarity of bedbug bites is the tendency to find several bites lined up in a row. Infectious-disease specialists refer to this series of bites as the “breakfast, lunch, and dinner” sign, signifying the sequential feeding that occurs from site to site. Bedbug bites may go unnoticed or be mistaken for flea or mosquito bites or other types of rash or skin conditions, since they are difficult to distinguish from other bites. Bedbugs also have glands whose secretions may leave odors, and they also may leave dark fecal spots on bed sheets and around their hiding places in crevices or protected areas around the bed or anywhere in the room. Bedbugs have not been conclusively proven to carry infectious microbes.  scientists have found no evidence that bed bugs are capable of transmitting diseases to human hosts. For this reason, they’re considered a nuisance pest rather than a health threat. When bed bug infestations started to rise in the U.S., many health departments and agencies were slow to respond to complaints about bed bugs, because they weren’t considered a public health issue and resources weren’t allocated for combating them. But though they don’t transmit diseases, bed bugs still pose a health risk.Studies are ongoing to determine whether bedbugs may serve as carriers of other diseases. The majority of bedbug bites are not serious. The only known serious consequences are severe allergic reactions, which have been reported in some people after bedbug bites.
